WTC FAMILIES FOR PROPER BURIAL

A Community of 9/11 Families, Friends & Concerned Citterns

JUST THE FACTS

2. 2,749 people were killed at the World Trade Center (WTC): only 292 full bodies were recovered.

1. This is not a partisan issue. Democrats, Republicans, Independents and foreign nationals have been bulldozed into the Fresh Kills Landfill.

Almost 1200  have no identification at all; and of the remaining victims, identifications have been as small as a bone shard.

3. During the Fresh Kills recovery efforts, we were told that the small tissue particles, bone fragments and cremated remains (then called “the fines”) still in the landfill could be retrieved for a proper burial once operations ended.

4. After these operations ended, we discovered that those remains had been bulldozed into an area of the landfill most recently used (March 2001) for dumping household refuse.

5. Journalists have never been permitted to accompany us in our visits to Fresh Kills.

6. We originally requested that the LMDC provide that a below ground level burial be included in the plans for the WTC memorial. However, the LMDC did not make this part of its guidelines and never responded to our written request.

7. In our attempts to determine jurisdiction we have contacted President Bush, Mayor Bloomberg, Governor Pataki, The Port Authority, The NYC Department of Sanitation and the LMDC. Most entities have deferred to Mayor Bloomberg, who has stated that the remains will NOT be moved.

8. We have circulated a petition demanding the proper burial of our loved ones, which currently has 55,200 signatures, including people from all 50 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and 46 foreign nations.

9. Families of over 1,000 victims have contacted us to help them secure proper burial.

10. Survivors, Pentagon families, rescue workers and volunteers have joined our mission.

11. We have received hundreds of endorsements, including those from 15 U.S. Senators (from both parties); many U.S. Congress members; State Governors; the FMBA; the PBA; the CWA; the National Guard; the American Legion; many religious organizations; the NJSLEOA; NADA/F; many active firefighters, police, and PA police; over 150 individual NY and NJ municipalities through town resolutions; Pride to a Nation; Daughter’s Day & Son’s Day Foundation; The Coalition of 9/11 families; and the Hispanic Victims Group.

12. We are NOT asking for further forensic identification work to be done at Fresh Kills; we merely want the remains removed in their entirety for a proper burial in a joint grave.
